When it comes to testers, education is one thing and experience is another. How can you gain experience if you can not get a job? And, how can you get a job if you have no experience? It is a no-win situation for most people, but have no fear. There are actually several ways that you can gain the experience needed to become a game tester before you ever fill out a job application. Here are 5 ways that anyone can gain experience needed to become a game tester:
1. Create your own "mini" games. This is easier than it sounds, especially for those who are familiar with computers and languages already. There are many places online where you can learn how to create your own games and play them. This will show potential employers that you know what it takes to make, and test, a game.
2. Write reviews. This is a simple one that anyone can do no matter how good your writing skills are. Start with some of the sites on the web that will allow anyone to post review about games. Write short reviews at first, until you get the hang of what needs to be done and how to do it. Then, move on to longer reviews and other web sites. Knowing what makes a good game and what does not, is a great way to show employers that you can be a good game tester.
3. Create mods. For example, write a game mod for one of the MMO or MMORPG games out there today. You can find out how to write these simple programs many different places on the Internet and then post them on different gaming sites for download. While you probably will not make any money with mods, you will gain the experience needed to show gaming companies that you know what you are doing.
4. Organize local events. This can work in many different ways, make sure that you are an active part of the video or computer gaming community and then start getting involved in different areas. Show people that you have what it takes to organize a gaming event, either online or off, and you will also show potential employers that you can be a great game tester.
5. Beta test new games. You can easily find different games online that are in the beta testing phases. You will have to be quick to get in on the beta, as most of the vacancies will fill up fast, but this is as close to real game testing experience as you can get without actually being hired as a game tester.
While there are many other things that you can do to gain experience in game testing, these are the top 5.
